The Chenderong Concession Royal Grant

This instrument in executed in the State of Terengganu Sunday, 2nd Muharam 1324.

Whereas we Sultan Zainal ‘Abidin Sovereign Ruler of the State of Trengganu and its territories have bestowed ceded and given possession of title to Tengku Ngah bin Tengku Abdul Rahim and his wife, Tengku Nik binti Zainal ‘Abidin the piece of land which is on the right side upstream of Sungai Cherol in Kemamam, province of Terengganu, as a gift and lawful cession and irrevocable to become the rightful possession of Tengku Ngah and Tengku Nik and their descendents perpetually, with specific boundary, i.e. downstream up to the Sungai Chenderong and continous into Sungai Burong following the boundary of Bundi and the boundary with the land of Sungai Sendok up to Sungai Rong Ketchil and upstream up to the meeting line with Pahang boundary, and on this side by the sea up to the bank of Sungai Cherol and the bank of Sungai Traju on the right upstream of the two rivers, and on the side by the land up to the left bank upstream Sungai Kemaman.

Whereas Tengku Ngah and Tengku Nik are hereby to accept possession of the said land and Tengku Ngah and Tengku Nik and their descendants are hereby to have power to deal with the said land its hills and rivers within the said boundary as the rightful owners, fully and effectually, forever without prohibition or dispute to them and free of government land rent as that place has become the rightful and disputed possession of Tengku Ngah and Tengku Nik: and it is also empowering a person to accept a surrender from Tengku Ngah and Tengku Nik or their next-of-kins, executors/administrators, representatives, attorneys and partners which enables him to have control over the said land in accordance with what is permitted and allowed by Tengku Ngah and Tengku Nik.

Whereas the government duty on things taken out of the place has been fixed, i-e- all kinds of mining output from the land such as tin ore, gold, silver or previous stones etc. The duty payable is calculated at 5% and from plants rubber, sago, cotton 1%, chilly/pepper, gambier, coconut and other plants 2 ½%, and from jungle produce such as timber, rattan etc. the duty shall be 5%, whenever they are taken out of the place and payable in kind from those things taken out or by their value.

All things taken into the places – opium one box/case the duty shall be $120/- i.e. one lum $3/- and Chinese and Javanese tobacco and other kinds of things all shall confirm to the law and regulation of the state of Trengganu as laid down by the Government from time to time. Also gambling and liquer both of them belong to the Government and the revenue therefrom shall be collected at any time deemed expedient by the Government except iron/steel equipment, or household goods/tools or machinery or things brought in by Government employees or labourers into place shall be exempted from duty.

In witness whereof we have herein to set the Government seal of Sultan Zainal ‘Abidin and the seal of Yang Dipertuan Muda hereinbelow.
